Yes. Thailand has no reciprocal healthcare agreement with the UK, so there is no state safety net at all. Tourists are usually treated at private international hospitals, which are excellent and expensive, and they expect payment or a valid insurance guarantee upfront. The average overseas medical claim is around £1,528 , and a serious case needing repatriation from Southeast Asia runs far higher.

Does travel insurance cover scooters and mopeds in Thailand?

This is the single most common gap. Hiring a scooter is almost a rite of passage in Thailand, and scooter accidents are one of the most frequent causes of tourist injury. Many standard policies only cover you if you hold a valid UK motorcycle licence, wear a helmet, and stay within engine-size limits. Ride without those and a claim can be refused. Thailand is a diving destination, and diving is an activity most standard policies exclude or limit by depth and qualification.
