Why does the area of cover matter so much?
Because the main thing you are insuring is emergency treatment and getting home, and those costs vary enormously by region.
Association of British Insurers figures put the average overseas medical claim at around £1,528, but the tail is what should focus the mind: one member paid out more than £1 million for emergency US hospital treatment and repatriation.
Repatriation is the fastest-rising part of that. A medical evacuation from the USA to the UK averaged over £192,000 in 2024, and from Spain around £45,000. That is why a policy covering the USA costs more than one that does not, and why choosing the right area of cover is the single most important decision on this page.
A GHIC or EHIC card helps inside the EU, but it is not a substitute: it does not cover repatriation or private treatment.
