Meet the Norton Commercial team: Mat McSwiggan

Commercial

Norton Insurance Brokers is pleased to announce the appointment of Mat McSwiggan as our Senior Commercial Account Executive, bringing extensive experience in business insurance to officially launch our commercial offering.

With a strong background in supporting businesses across the Midlands, Mat will play a key role in ensuring clients have the cover they need to protect their business from all risks they face.

To introduce him to our clients and partners, we sat down for a Q&A to learn more about him, his experience and how he plans to support businesses with their insurance needs.

Hi, I’m Mat. I was born and raised in Peterborough but moved to the Black Country (Halesowen) in 2005 – thanks to a coin toss (heads won!).

I have two amazing children: Sienna, 19, and Shae, 15, who’s practically my shadow. They both keep me on my toes!

I love life and live by the motto: “We’re here for a good time, not a long time,” so I embrace every moment. Fun fact: I’m highly allergic to peas… and I’ve been bitten by a shark!

I began my career in insurance in 1997, starting in personal lines (car insurance) with Budget Insurance. I have many fond memories of my time there and built lifelong friendships – some of whom are still with the company today.

After some travels abroad (which didn’t take me much further than Majorca, but that’s a story for another time), I returned to the UK and settled in Birmingham. In 2009, I joined Heath Lambert, which later became AJG. This was a pivotal experience in my career, as I developed my commercial insurance expertise as an Account Executive. My role initially focused on new business acquisition, both internally and externally, across the construction, manufacturing, engineering, and retail sectors – with the occasional motor trade client as well. Once again, I had the privilege of working with a fantastic team, many of whom I still stay in touch with today.

Like many professionals, I faced a few challenges along the way, but I eventually found my footing at Johnston Park McAndrew (now BEAM). I spent an incredible 10 years there, working with a great team and gaining invaluable insights into the industry. As a New Business Account Executive, I built my book from the ground up through networking, referrals, social media, and good old-fashioned cold calling and door-knocking.

During this time, I was fortunate to work closely with Dave Johnston, the company’s MD at the time, who served as my boss, mentor, and go-to resource. His vast knowledge and experience in commercial insurance were instrumental in my professional growth, and I will always be grateful for his guidance. More than just a mentor, he remains a lifelong friend.

From my very first visit to the office, I knew this was the right fit for me. I firmly believe in trusting your instincts, and everything about that initial experience felt right – from the warm welcome, to my conversations with the management team. What drew me in was the opportunity, the company’s history, its values, the people, and the challenge ahead.

As Senior Commercial Account Executive, my focus will be on expanding the commercial division of the business, strengthening our relationships with insurers, and enhancing our team’s knowledge of commercial lines and business risks. The foundations are already in place, and I’m excited to help build on them and drive growth for the business.

What’s the most common mistake you see businesses make with their insurance?

One of the most common mistakes I see is businesses failing to review their insurance programs regularly and frequently switching insurers year after year. While cost is always a consideration, loyalty and consistency with an insurer can be key to securing better long-term cover and service.

If a business isn’t sure whether they have the right insurance in place, what should they do?

The best course of action is to speak with their broker and ask for a thorough review. A good broker will identify any gaps in cover and recommend additional policies that provide better protection. We provide a free business insurance health check for those that are interested too.

I’ve met with many businesses that lack crucial coverage such as directors & officers (D&O) insurance and adequate cyber insurance. These policies are critical in today’s business environment, yet they are often overlooked. A conversation with a knowledgeable broker can help ensure that all potential risks are properly addressed.

What are you looking forward to most in your new role?

I’m excited to promote the Norton Commercial brand through various channels, including networking events, insurance seminars, and our personal lines clients. My goal is to establish Norton as the go-to broker in the West Midlands.

And finally, what do you like to do in your spare time?

I’m a passionate football fan. My son, Shae, plays for both a Saturday and Sunday team, and I actively help coach and manage both.

I also support three incredible charities:

  • Edward’s Trust: A bereavement charity providing vital support to families.
  • Smile 4 Joel: An organisation helping families affected by murder and terrorism.
  • Kaleidoscope: A mental health charity offering crucial services.

I’m committed to raising awareness and much-needed funds for all three, and when available I’m always happy to throw myself out of a plane, climb mountains, abseil down buildings, run marathons, shave my head and grow a moustache (Movember) to name a few fund-raising events.
